Local Business Reporting
Just the facts here, ma'am
I don’t read any news any more. I left metropolis to come work at Clute because small businesses matter. From real estate to breweries, small businesses drive the whole world. Also Clark was getting obnoxious.Louis Lane
Zach Reeves stumbled out of bed on Monday morning throwing on his work clothes and trademark glasses. He shot out the door and hopped in his GMC Sierra heading towards the office, on time again. It was a beautiful Fall day. Zach rolled the window down and breathed in. He could swear he smelled Football in the air, or maybe it was just the Fall leaves.
Today his mind was on artificial grass and miniature golf, though. He had landed a big project for his company in downtown Plainsville. Zach was born and raised in Plainsville, so when the Mayor had asked for his help with the downtown rejuvenation project his only answer was yes, of course!
Zach pulled up to the small white building his company occupied and noticed a car he didn’t recognize in the lot. Thinking that was strange because they didn’t typically have visitors he approached the buildings front door. Before he could reach for the handle though the door exploded open. “Hi, Mr. Reeves, right? My name is Bridgette, and I must say I am a huge fan! I’m sure you get that a lot. Anyways I work for the Plainsville Journal and I would love to snag an interview with you.” Bridgette looked down at her watch, “Say right now? Are you free?”
Zach took a step back studying her face. He couldn’t help but think she was quite pretty. She was also staring at him with her large green eyes. Crap, he thought, what did she just say? He wasn’t sure how to respond so he just said, “Sure.”
Bridgette’s face broke into a huge smile, “Oh great, my editor is going to be thrilled! You are the best Mr. Reeves.”
“Please, call me Zach,” he replied, still unsure of what he had just agreed to.
“Okay, Zach,” she laughed putting air quotes around his name, “so shall we?”
“Shall we what?” Zach questioned.
Bridgette giggled again, “Shall we start the interview silly.” She reached out and put her hand on his arm.
Shoot, he thought, what had he just agreed to? He was pretty sure he had a 10 AM meeting he would be needing to cancel now. Even worse, he really did not want to get interviewed. She left him no choice though because apparently, he had already agreed. So, he said, “My office is the second door on the left.” He motioned with his hand towards the hallway.
Bridgette released a breath, and it sounded like she had been holding it in for some time. She talked a mile a minute, Zach thought. “Great,” she said relaxing her shoulders. “So, first question, what inspired your business?”
“Um, I guess it was a combination of my Dad and my love for small town living,” Zach replied.
“Wow, that is so insightful. Okay, so what is your 5-year plan for the business?” Bridgette inquired.
“I guess I haven’t thought about it,” Zach replied, his face reddening.
“Oh my gosh that is so brave,” Bridgette replied. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and uncomfortable all at the same time. “Okay, last question, what are your plans for the big downtown rejuvenation project?”
Now, this was a question Zach could get behind, “Well, I grew up here and I am so thankful I get to be a part of this project. I was planning on using our turf to create a new putting green and miniature golf course where that old abandoned lot is. Not only will this clean up that lot, but it will provide a whole new activity that people can do, which should drive more foot traffic to the local shops and restaurants in the area. I’m really excited to see this come together.”
Bridgette replied, “O my, that is simply wonderful, I can’t wait to see it when it’s done.”

Gwen instinctively bit the end of her pen while she waited for her guest to arrive. She had never been interviewed before and despite the fact that she is not a shy person, she speaks publicly in court all the time, she was feeling a little nervous.
Tim walked through the front door under the Immigration Lawyer’s sign and glanced at his watch, oh gosh, he thought, five minutes late how rude.
“Hi, I’m here to speak with Gwen Charm,” he smiled warmly at the receptionist.
“Great, I’ll let her know you’re here,” the blonde receptionist said with a smile.
A minute later a petite brunette emerged from an office. Extending her hand, she said, “Hi, Tim? I’m Gwen it is a pleasure to meet you.”
Tim was awestruck. He had never seen such a beautiful woman before and to make matters worse he was a huge fan of her work. He had no idea how he was going to make it through this interview. He shook her hand and replied, “Gwen it is so nice to meet you, I apologize I’m a little bit tardy.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it, shall we get started?” She replied, directing him into her office. She couldn’t help but notice Tim was quite attractive. She thought, great as if she wasn’t nervous enough.
“So, Gwen I’m here today to talk with you about the work you have done here in Orange County as an immigration attorney. You have made a huge impact on the community and won the hearts of our locals through your selfless work. What would you say is your inspiration?” Tim began, going into reporter mode.
Gwen couldn’t help but blush. “Wow, thank you. I’m not sure what sort of impact I’ve made. I hope it has been a positive one. What I do know is I care very deeply about this community and it is important to me to help those in need. I am inspired every day by the people I meet,” she said.
“That’s amazing,” Tim replied. “Have you always known that you wanted to go into immigration law?”
“Yes, well ever since law school. I worked at an internship that really made me see the importance of immigration law and helping people stand up for themselves. The whole process can be the scariest thing to ever happen in an individual’s life. It is important to me to support and help those in need,” Gwen replied.
Tim was very much enjoying the interview. He continued, “If you had to say, who is your role model?”
Gwen had to think about that one. Finally, she answered, “I guess I would have to say, my mom. When I think back she is the one who taught me to treat others how I wanted to be treated. She taught me to work hard and always stand up for the little guy. I guess you could say she is kind of my moral compass.”
Tim looked at Gwen and took a deep breath. Finally, he knew he had to do it or else he would probably regret it forever. “Last question,” he said, “but this one is off the record. Would you like to go to dinner with me sometime?”
Gwen’s mouth formed an O shape in shock then said, “Yes,” with a smile.
Well, that settled it in Tim’s mind, best interview ever!

Tyler and Kelsey’s wedding had been a beautiful whirlwind. When they returned home from the wedding they began to open their gifts. One gift stood out above the rest for its interesting and unbelievable nature.
Tyler and Kelsey could not believe it as they read through the card Kelsey’s uncle had sent. The card read,
Dear Kelsey and Tyler,
Congratulations on your special day! It is a beautiful thing to find somebody who you love and who loves you. I hope you two will cherish each other for years to come and have a beautiful life together just like your Aunt Edith and me.
My gift to you is a new home to house your beautiful memories in. This home is fully paid for and, plot twist, it has not been built yet. Contact the builders at Sailhouse Custom Home Construction to start designing your dream home. There will be no budget for this house, I just hope you will build a home to share many happy memories in.
Your Uncle Harvey
What made this strange, in addition to being gifted an entire house, was the fact that to Kelsey’s knowledge she did not have an Uncle Harvey. There was no return address on the card, just the letter and the contact info for Sailhouse Custom Home Construction.
They could not help but think their friends were pulling a prank on them. Tyler laughed and said, “Well thanks, Uncle Harvey. Let’s give our new home builders a call.” Kelsey laughed too as Tyler began to dial the number for the alleged Mike. To their complete surprise though a man answered.
“Hello this is Mike with Sailhouse Home Construction,” the voice on the other end of the line said.
Tyler looked at Kelsey in shock, “Um, hello this is Tyler. My wife’s uncle had given us your information about building a new house.”
“Oh yes Tyler, I was wondering if you two would ever call. How was the wedding? Beautiful I hope. Why don’t you guys come in tomorrow and we will get all squared away on the plan so we can start construction. That is some uncle of yours offering to pay for everything!” He replied, “How does noon tomorrow sound? My office is here in town.”

“Wow, sounds great,” Tyler replied.
The next day they went into their meeting with Mike and sure enough, Kelsey’s uncle had already paid for everything. They worked with Mike to draw up the plans for their dream house and 4 months later it was time to unveil the masterpiece.
Tyler and Kelsey showed up at 9 AM for their final walk through and they could not believe their eyes. The house had a beautiful large yard, a gorgeous kitchen, six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a great living space for entertaining, and more.
They were so happy with Mike’s work Kelsey could not help but give him a huge hug. Their only regret was never being able to track down her mysterious Uncle Harvey and thank him. They had asked all of their family members and nobody knew anything about an Uncle Harvey… or so they said. Maybe someday they would find out the truth about him but until then they would most certainly enjoy their new home.
The most important ability one must master to become a true garage sale shopping professional is the ability to negotiate. Like any skill, it takes time and determination to master the art of garage sale shopping. Some tips to help you become a master garage sale negotiator are to follow below.
Let’s say you wake up one morning and realize you need a writing desk in your living room; your budget is tight though, or maybe you prefer the character of used furniture to the new furniture you would find at your run of the mill Ikea store. Well, it sounds like it’s time to hit your small-town garage sales. There are tons of places to find used furniture in OC.
The first tip, don’t wear your nicest clothes to the sale. If you want to find the perfect piece of used furniture you must remember, don’t wear anything even remotely expensive. When you walk up the drive, ready to hunt for that picture-perfect writing desk you woke up itching for, you don’t want to look like you have money to blow. The garage sale host will be analyzing everyone that shops at their humble abode. You don’t want them buzzing around while you’re trying to make your first big find because they noticed your Michael Kors watch. Also, once you do find something that really catches your eye you’ll have more haggle power if they don’t automatically assume you are in a position to pay top dollar.
Tip number two, strike up a conversation with the host at the appropriate time. Timing is everything when it comes to small-town yard sales. Have a look around while maintaining an air of polite nonverbal body language and then once you know what you want, go in for the kill. Approach the host with a smile and a polite greeting. Remember all of these things were once loved possessions, complimenting their great taste will make them feel warmly towards you. Even go so far as to inquire about how their day is going. Mention you hope the sale goes well for them. Then compliment the item you would like to buy. Let’s say you found that perfect piece of used furniture, a writing desk that would fit great in your home. Now, this part is important, don’t overstate your desire to own faultless writing desk. Just mention that you like it and might be interested. This leads us into the third tip, don’t be the first to throw out a price.
A smart garage sale host won’t give you a price, they’ll ask you want you think it’s worth. That way you may potentially offer more than they would have asked for it. Do not be fooled by this trickery, instead ask them what an item like this is worth? This will put the ball in your court because they may offer less than you were originally thinking or you can always then take that opportunity to throw out a price you would genuinely be comfortable with. There may come a time where a price cannot be agreed upon. This can be very upsetting. You’ve now found this amazing piece of used furniture, you can already picture it in your home, but it’s out of reach price-wise.
This leads us to our fourth and final tip, you must always be willing to walk away. The willingness to walk away will solidify your buying power. The perfect piece of used furniture isn’t perfect if the price isn’t right.
One of my favorite spots to find used furniture is at Creative Office Design. You can find them at the address below:
There are things in life that we all take for granted. Those seemingly little things that we don’t give much thought to until we no longer have them or they stop working and all of a sudden they begin to dominate our lives. When this happens we instantly look to the best people around to help us get things working again. Let’s look at a few examples:
Our health is a classic one. You never realize how much you take your health for granted until you are sick. As soon as you get sick, you instantly realize how nice it is to be healthy and you begin to do whatever you need to do to get healthy again. Whether that is visiting a doctor, eating better, or simply resting. Then naturally, as soon as we get healthy, we tend to take it for granted again. So, don’t let that happen to you today. Consider this your reminder that being healthy is something we should be thankful for and take full advantage of!
This is a big one. If you are at work (or at home) and the internet goes out, our lives seem to come to a halt. We don’t realize just how much of our time and our activity is dependent on the internet. From texting and talking to friends, to sending emails, to working with online software and games, to streaming Netflix or Hulu. So much of what we do is tied to the internet. It is really amazing considering just a few decades ago the internet as we know it didn’t exist!
Water is obviously something that we all know we need, but we often take for granted just how easy and convenient it is for us to access clean, fresh water. I certainly took this for granted until I visited some very impoverished countries in Africa. In some areas that I visited water was not a guarantee. Here in my home, I know that I can turn on the sink and have fresh drinking water, or turn on the shower and wash, run the washing machine and have clean clothes, or even just flush the toilet! In many places though, they don’t have these luxuries. After I returned home, one of my most treasured “luxuries” was being able to have a hot shower whenever I wanted.
Electricity is our last one for today. Just like water, it is one of those things that you don’t realize you need until you don’t have it anymore and so much of our life depends on it. Earlier we looked at how important the Internet is to us, well, just think that even the Internet is dependent upon electricity. If the electricity goes out, not only do we not have the internet, but we don’t have any lights, TV’s, computers, or appliances! This happened to our office the other week which is what inspired this article. I took electricity for granted, and as soon as it went out I needed to find the best electrician to help us get back and running as soon as possible. And boy did I! I’ve got their information at the bottom of this article and I would highly recommend them. They got out to our offices right away and got us up and running again quickly.
If you drive an electric vehicle as I do, you never know when you will need a car charger. I found this out the hard way when I got home with my new car and didn’t have any place to charge it. I needed someone to come out and do an electric car charger installation for me right away, otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to drive to work the next day! Fortunately, those same guys were able to help me out and got me and my car set up and ready to go!
This whole process has made me a lot more thankful for some of the things I have and I hope this article can help you feel a little more thankful as well!

Welcome to the SB Business Journal where we highlight businesses and only focus on solid facts. Our goal is to dive into the meat of businesses, cutting out the fluff, and finding out just how good they really are and if they deserve your business.
This week we are focusing on Neural FX Chiropractic Kalapp Health, chiropractors that are based in San Bernardino County.
Neural FX Chiropractic specializes in Chiropractic Neurology which combines chiropractic care, neurology, and physical rehabilitation. They work with patients who are dealing with sports injuries, chronic pain, head injuries, balance problems, developmental disorders, concentration difficulty, and anxiety disorders to name a few.
They claim that they are able to diagnose the levels where the problems are occurring and then reconnect the bodily structures and functions that allow the human body to function in a symptom-free, healthy state. They also claim that you will be greeted by a friendly staff. Let’s dive in and see what real people with real experience have said about their experience with Neural FX Chiropractic and if their claims about themselves hold up.
Greeted By Friendly Staff
“The ladies in the office where very nice and professional.” -Charlene
“Dr. Kalapp is also one of the kindest people I know and I would trust him and recommend him to anyone!” – Anita
“…they have amazing staff that cater to your every need with a smile!!” – Fernando, Rancho Cucamonga
“And he has the most awesome staff, I don’t think I have a word to say how good I feel when I walk in his office and they treat you like family.” – Elizabeth, Rancho Cucamonga
Our Take Away: After a thorough review of client reports it is easy to see that Neural FX Chiropractic does in fact have amazing staff and that you are greeted with a friendly smile.
That is nice and all, but let’s dive into the real issue here, do their services actually help people? It is one thing to be greeted by a smile, it is another to walk out of their office pain free.
Allow The Human Body To Function In A Symptom-Free, Healthy State
“Urgent care doctor told her it was a muscle spasm but after meeting with Dr. Kalapp and finding out what was wrong…he did an adjustment and laser on her back and she actually felt better right away.” – Charlene
“I cannot express how much my pain has subsided since I’ve started treatment here and I couldn’t be happier with how fast this treatment has changed my life…” – Fernando, Rancho Cucamonga
“…this guy makes me feel better and allows me to move again, so I can keep doing what I love, teaching jiu-jitsu.” – Tom
“I came here on a last minute ; I need to be adjusted!!!’ After 4 months of back pain. I was fixed in a snap and a pop and now feel great!” – Sal, Rancho Cucamonga
Our Take Away: After our review we literally could not find a single negative one. Every reports a fantastic experience and that they are feeling better after they have visited Dr. Kalapp and his associates.
We not only can substantiate their claims, but we also can highly recommend Neural FX Chiropractic to you.
What is life if its not trying to get through it with as few accidents as possible. Accidents happen to us all both big a small and every size in between. Some accidents have little consequence while others can be fairly large. The ramifications can hurt physically, emotionally, mentally, or monetarily. Typically, ramifications are some combination of any of those or even all of them. So what are you doing to prepare? Sure there are plenty of preventative things you can do that may minimize the risk of an accident or at least the severity of it. Wear a helmet, stay indoors more often, doomsday prep maybe? Whatever the preventative measure, it will not eliminate accidents from your life. So how are you preparing for them?
Be resourceful! Know where to look when something happens. Are you insured? Is your car, your house, your life? Do you have a savings? All standard things that keep the whole ship from sinking should some major accident come crashing through the roof or through that red light. So what happens when damages from an accident are beyond repair? What happens when they can be repaired but its not going your way? When your insurance preparations don’t work they way they should, then what?
Be resourceful! Luckily for you reading this blog, we are resourceful too! We like to bring the facts of local businesses that can help you be resourceful. So what are we talking about here. Accident law firms or as many call them, personal injury attorneys. We can guess your first thought… There Are So Many! How do you pick a good one? How do you know when you should find one? We asked ourselves the same questions so we could report to you on our findings. Here they are!
If you are anywhere in the Southern California area we have just the firm for you! They are extremely well reviewed in the area and they have an excellent team with some amazing experience. They cover most personal injury situations involving any moving vehicle or aircraft as well as assault and brain injury. If you have been a car accident, chances are you would be better off with the best car accidents attorneys in town. These lawyers have a ten score on Avvo and have earned the Super Lawyer rating for 2018. If that’s not enough, there are plenty case studies and testimonials all over their website. If you want to look at some of their reviews, you can look at the platform of your choice but we recommend checking out their Yelp profile. Its pretty stellar!
So, the next an accident happens to you, once you get past the initial “Why me!?” question we all ask ourselves, remember that you are resourceful and have the ability to mitigate some major damages from an accident and in some cases even end up better off than when you started. Alas, here is the firms information for your records!

Safety and security are important to us as human beings. The more things we earn in life, the more we want to protect whats ours and not lose what we’ve gained. This very mindset led us to birth an industry that is now one of the biggest in the world. Insurance. Good ol insurance that we have all come to love and hate depending on the situation and the insurance service you are using. With such a booming industry, many companies were founded all trying to be a little different by providing better insurance with more coverage at better rates. You’d think the competition would make for a buyers market right? Well since insurance is all but required to be a functioning citizen, insurance companies have an advantage. They get to compete with each other to an extent but they know the demand will never get too low. Where has this led us? Into a world where 4 or 5 big companies that all have appealing rates with less coverage seem to be the only options.
People are getting tired of being left with only the big companies that seem to offer “free” benefits yet the premiums increase. Instead, people are willing to lose some of the benefits for cheaper coverage.
“In J.D. Power’s 2017 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study, price has become a more influential factor in brand consideration and quoting, surpassing the importance of a good past service experience. For small insurers to compete with their larger competitors, some of the lowest rates can be found with the lesser-known and smaller companies. And while these smaller companies may not be able to offer all the frills and extra benefits of the larger companies, with less overhead, they may be in position to offer lower rates.”
While this new trend has opened the door for smaller insurance companies to flourish, it has also flooded the market with options and options and more options. There are only so many benefits that a small insurance company can offer and only at so low of rates. Luckily for the consumer, this makes client agent interaction become more important. People want to be insured by someone they feel they can trust. So where do you start searching?
As much of our readership is in Southern California, we recommend starting at Chrysalis Insurance Agency. They are an established agency that is owned by a family that’s been in business long enough to make you feel comfortable. They can cover almost any of your insurance needs and make sure your plan is tailored just for you. They cover all kinds of insurance like business, auto, drone, life, and full home insurance in Newport Beach! Yes even for the multi-million dollar houses.
So start your search! Start where you want of course. If you do start at Chrysalis, you may find that your search will be pretty short.

Buying a home is a rite of passage in the Land of Opportunity but in big cities, that is happening less and less frequently. Younger generations are looking at the current real estate market and realizing their dollar can go so much further in the country than in overcrowded cities. This exodus to suburban, interior states has spurned an uptick in the real estate market around the country. It’s a seller’s year to be sure but what does this mean when property is in conflict? What happens if there’s a dispute over title, or an owner decides to rent their property instead of selling? Landlordship is not as regal or glamorous as the feudal name may imply. It is important now more than ever for property owners to receive adept legal counsel as they venture into new avenues of property management. This week’s small business spotlight is Burris Law in California, specializing in estate planning, business, and real estate law.
In a seller’s market, many home owners are trying to make the most out of their investment and that’s where transaction guidance is needed. Most real estate investors rely on their agent to guide them through the process but where and agent’s knowledge fails is where a trusted legal advisor steps in to guide an investor to a safe deal.
The second, perhaps more important part of a real estate transaction is not the change of ownership, but the protection of the real property asset after the purchase. If a residential property is not enumerated in a trust, it is eligible for probate if the owner were to pass. If a commercial property is not entrusted to an LLC or other entity, then the death of an owner can wreak havoc on a company beyond the already perilous need for key-man replacement. This is where Burris Law is a cut above the competition by offering business law and estate planning law under the same roof. From incorporation and purchase to dissolution, sale, and end of life Burris law protects the most valuable assets that individuals can own.
Navigating treacherous legal waters without adequate counsel can leave many homeowners in turmoil. With the guidance of Burris Law, numerous informed real estate investors now have a way to maneuver through the transaction process without the complications of real estate brokerages. Check out what Katherine had to say:
Jason was phenomenal!
I decided to sell my home by owner however, I needed a real estate attorney to assist me with reviewing documents and ensuring I was protected. I needed a real estate attorney quick, and Jason was there! I had a meeting set up with him within 24 hours and from the moment we signed a contract to the moment I closed escrow, Jason was there. No matter the day or time, he would respond via email or phone call. If he wasn’t able to get to what I needed right then and there, he would acknowledge receipt and give me an estimate time of when he would be available to respond. Jason was also proactive and would check in with me every now and then to ensure I didn’t need anything. Not knowing what I was doing, Jason and Burris Law gave me the assurance and confidence I needed in order for a smooth sale. I highly recommend Jason and Burris Law for your Real Estate Attorney needs!
It is the distinct journalistic pleasure of our Clute Institute local business review to feature the legal team at Burris Law. Keep up the good work. Visit their contact information below

Consultants dedicate careers to the idea of cultivating a “flow state” for corporate environments. Specialists, thought-leaders, gurus and shamans sell seminars and courses dedicated to the topic but frequently fall short of anything more than breathing and cheesy playlists. However, UK government sponsored research now illuminates that one of the chief contributions to workplace productivity is office layout. The physical space in which one works has an overwhelmingly strong influence on final work product.
Picture a beige and fluorescent white sea of sterile office grid. Picture this bleak prism prison for months, years, and decades. Welcome to the unfortunate plight of the office worker post 1980. Fast forward to the Google coffee bar work lounge delivering world-warping code with giddily happy employees. What happened the acoustic dampening panels and clean grid lines? Human conversation and big data happened. Tech startups and forward-thinking market leaders realized that their employees could perform better (ironically designing robots) so long as they weren’t treated as robots. The invention of the open floor-plan broke the grid system and refused to reassemble the pieces.
So the paradigm shifted and even small businesses today operate on open floorplans and office layouts that cater to creative flow. Liquidating used cubicles in lieu of new adjustable sit-to-stand desks and polygonal workstations began to coax out more creativity juice from the minds of young professionals than grey mouse-mazes could ever pound from them. Today companies look to move their old cubicles and purchase new workstations from industry leaders like Creative Office Design. Office Furniture is no longer a boring afternoon meeting with the Operations and HR departments, it’s part interior design strategist, part feng shui shaman, part skeletal physiological ninja.
New collaborative table plans, contemporary desk arrangements and ergo-seating pairings make for a head-spinning number of choices that make genuine, trackable impact in the productivity of the workforce they elegantly yet sturdily support. And think how just a few years ago, ‘hang in there’ cat posters were considered acceptable corporate art and not vomit-inducing, sarcastic memes. Today offices compete to craft truly artistic flow spaces from the most contemporary office furniture distributors.
Lo and behold these investments in the human capital of commercial space pays dividends several orders of magnitude larger than the furniture investment days of office past. Fortunate for the spinal, social, and psychological health of the workers, collaborate flow spaces and half-caf, non-fat, upsidedown, marble mocha macchiatos come as standard perks of the job. Perhaps the pendulum will swing back the other direction and ‘bring your aardvark to work’ days will thin down a bit but until that day office managers are clamoring over the local office furniture dealers with modern showrooms and fast shipping. This week’s featured business is leading the charge to the highest retention office layouts in the market with their Orange County showroom available by appointment only.
