New Life In A Small Town

New Life In A Small Town

Zach Reeves stumbled out of bed on Monday morning throwing on his work clothes and trademark glasses. He shot out the door and hopped in his GMC Sierra heading towards the office, on time again. It was a beautiful Fall day. Zach rolled the window down and breathed in. He could swear he smelled Football in the air, or maybe it was just the Fall leaves.

Today his mind was on artificial grass and miniature golf, though. He had landed a big project for his company in downtown Plainsville. Zach was born and raised in Plainsville, so when the Mayor had asked for his help with the downtown rejuvenation project his only answer was yes, of course!

Zach pulled up to the small white building his company occupied and noticed a car he didn’t recognize in the lot. Thinking that was strange because they didn’t typically have visitors he approached the buildings front door. Before he could reach for the handle though the door exploded open. “Hi, Mr. Reeves, right? My name is Bridgette, and I must say I am a huge fan! I’m sure you get that a lot. Anyways I work for the Plainsville Journal and I would love to snag an interview with you.” Bridgette looked down at her watch, “Say right now? Are you free?”

Zach took a step back studying her face. He couldn’t help but think she was quite pretty. She was also staring at him with her large green eyes. Crap, he thought, what did she just say? He wasn’t sure how to respond so he just said, “Sure.”

Bridgette’s face broke into a huge smile, “Oh great, my editor is going to be thrilled! You are the best Mr. Reeves.”

“Please, call me Zach,” he replied, still unsure of what he had just agreed to.

“Okay, Zach,” she laughed putting air quotes around his name, “so shall we?”

“Shall we what?” Zach questioned.

Bridgette giggled again, “Shall we start the interview silly.” She reached out and put her hand on his arm.

Shoot, he thought, what had he just agreed to? He was pretty sure he had a 10 AM meeting he would be needing to cancel now. Even worse, he really did not want to get interviewed. She left him no choice though because apparently, he had already agreed. So, he said, “My office is the second door on the left.” He motioned with his hand towards the hallway.

Bridgette released a breath, and it sounded like she had been holding it in for some time. She talked a mile a minute, Zach thought. “Great,” she said relaxing her shoulders. “So, first question, what inspired your business?”

“Um, I guess it was a combination of my Dad and my love for small town living,” Zach replied.

“Wow, that is so insightful. Okay, so what is your 5-year plan for the business?” Bridgette inquired.

“I guess I haven’t thought about it,” Zach replied, his face reddening.

“Oh my gosh that is so brave,” Bridgette replied. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and uncomfortable all at the same time. “Okay, last question, what are your plans for the big downtown rejuvenation project?”

Now, this was a question Zach could get behind, “Well, I grew up here and I am so thankful I get to be a part of this project. I was planning on using our turf to create a new putting green and miniature golf course where that old abandoned lot is. Not only will this clean up that lot, but it will provide a whole new activity that people can do, which should drive more foot traffic to the local shops and restaurants in the area. I’m really excited to see this come together.”

Bridgette replied, “O my, that is simply wonderful, I can’t wait to see it when it’s done.”

Last Question

Last Question

Gwen instinctively bit the end of her pen while she waited for her guest to arrive. She had never been interviewed before and despite the fact that she is not a shy person, she speaks publicly in court all the time, she was feeling a little nervous.

Tim walked through the front door under the Immigration Lawyer’s sign and glanced at his watch, oh gosh, he thought, five minutes late how rude.

“Hi, I’m here to speak with Gwen Charm,” he smiled warmly at the receptionist.

“Great, I’ll let her know you’re here,” the blonde receptionist said with a smile.

A minute later a petite brunette emerged from an office. Extending her hand, she said, “Hi, Tim? I’m Gwen it is a pleasure to meet you.”

Tim was awestruck. He had never seen such a beautiful woman before and to make matters worse he was a huge fan of her work. He had no idea how he was going to make it through this interview. He shook her hand and replied, “Gwen it is so nice to meet you, I apologize I’m a little bit tardy.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it, shall we get started?” She replied, directing him into her office. She couldn’t help but notice Tim was quite attractive. She thought, great as if she wasn’t nervous enough.

“So, Gwen I’m here today to talk with you about the work you have done here in Orange County as an immigration attorney. You have made a huge impact on the community and won the hearts of our locals through your selfless work. What would you say is your inspiration?” Tim began, going into reporter mode.

Gwen couldn’t help but blush. “Wow, thank you. I’m not sure what sort of impact I’ve made. I hope it has been a positive one. What I do know is I care very deeply about this community and it is important to me to help those in need. I am inspired every day by the people I meet,” she said.

“That’s amazing,” Tim replied. “Have you always known that you wanted to go into immigration law?”

“Yes, well ever since law school. I worked at an internship that really made me see the importance of immigration law and helping people stand up for themselves. The whole process can be the scariest thing to ever happen in an individual’s life. It is important to me to support and help those in need,” Gwen replied.

Tim was very much enjoying the interview. He continued, “If you had to say, who is your role model?”

Gwen had to think about that one. Finally, she answered, “I guess I would have to say, my mom. When I think back she is the one who taught me to treat others how I wanted to be treated. She taught me to work hard and always stand up for the little guy. I guess you could say she is kind of my moral compass.”

Tim looked at Gwen and took a deep breath. Finally, he knew he had to do it or else he would probably regret it forever. “Last question,” he said, “but this one is off the record. Would you like to go to dinner with me sometime?”

Gwen’s mouth formed an O shape in shock then said, “Yes,” with a smile.

Well, that settled it in Tim’s mind, best interview ever!

The Mysterious Uncle Harvey

The Mysterious Uncle Harvey

Tyler and Kelsey’s wedding had been a beautiful whirlwind. When they returned home from the wedding they began to open their gifts. One gift stood out above the rest for its interesting and unbelievable nature.

Tyler and Kelsey could not believe it as they read through the card Kelsey’s uncle had sent. The card read,

Dear Kelsey and Tyler,

Congratulations on your special day! It is a beautiful thing to find somebody who you love and who loves you. I hope you two will cherish each other for years to come and have a beautiful life together just like your Aunt Edith and me.

My gift to you is a new home to house your beautiful memories in. This home is fully paid for and, plot twist, it has not been built yet. Contact the builders at Sailhouse Custom Home Construction to start designing your dream home. There will be no budget for this house, I just hope you will build a home to share many happy memories in.

Love,

Your Uncle Harvey

What made this strange, in addition to being gifted an entire house, was the fact that to Kelsey’s knowledge she did not have an Uncle Harvey. There was no return address on the card, just the letter and the contact info for Sailhouse Custom Home Construction.

They could not help but think their friends were pulling a prank on them. Tyler laughed and said, “Well thanks, Uncle Harvey. Let’s give our new home builders a call.” Kelsey laughed too as Tyler began to dial the number for the alleged Mike. To their complete surprise though a man answered.

“Hello this is Mike with Sailhouse Home Construction,” the voice on the other end of the line said.

Tyler looked at Kelsey in shock, “Um, hello this is Tyler. My wife’s uncle had given us your information about building a new house.”

“Oh yes Tyler, I was wondering if you two would ever call. How was the wedding? Beautiful I hope. Why don’t you guys come in tomorrow and we will get all squared away on the plan so we can start construction. That is some uncle of yours offering to pay for everything!” He replied, “How does noon tomorrow sound? My office is here in town.”

“Wow, sounds great,” Tyler replied.

The next day they went into their meeting with Mike and sure enough, Kelsey’s uncle had already paid for everything. They worked with Mike to draw up the plans for their dream house and 4 months later it was time to unveil the masterpiece.

Tyler and Kelsey showed up at 9 AM for their final walk through and they could not believe their eyes. The house had a beautiful large yard, a gorgeous kitchen, six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a great living space for entertaining, and more.

They were so happy with Mike’s work Kelsey could not help but give him a huge hug. Their only regret was never being able to track down her mysterious Uncle Harvey and thank him. They had asked all of their family members and nobody knew anything about an Uncle Harvey… or so they said. Maybe someday they would find out the truth about him but until then they would most certainly enjoy their new home.

How to Become a Garage Sale Shopping Pro

How to Become a Garage Sale Shopping Pro

The most important ability one must master to become a true garage sale shopping professional is the ability to negotiate. Like any skill, it takes time and determination to master the art of garage sale shopping. Some tips to help you become a master garage sale negotiator are to follow below.

Let’s say you wake up one morning and realize you need a writing desk in your living room; your budget is tight though, or maybe you prefer the character of used furniture to the new furniture you would find at your run of the mill Ikea store. Well, it sounds like it’s time to hit your small-town garage sales. There are tons of places to find used furniture in OC.

The first tip, don’t wear your nicest clothes to the sale. If you want to find the perfect piece of used furniture you must remember, don’t wear anything even remotely expensive. When you walk up the drive, ready to hunt for that picture-perfect writing desk you woke up itching for, you don’t want to look like you have money to blow. The garage sale host will be analyzing everyone that shops at their humble abode. You don’t want them buzzing around while you’re trying to make your first big find because they noticed your Michael Kors watch. Also, once you do find something that really catches your eye you’ll have more haggle power if they don’t automatically assume you are in a position to pay top dollar.

Tip number two, strike up a conversation with the host at the appropriate time. Timing is everything when it comes to small-town yard sales. Have a look around while maintaining an air of polite nonverbal body language and then once you know what you want, go in for the kill. Approach the host with a smile and a polite greeting. Remember all of these things were once loved possessions, complimenting their great taste will make them feel warmly towards you. Even go so far as to inquire about how their day is going. Mention you hope the sale goes well for them. Then compliment the item you would like to buy. Let’s say you found that perfect piece of used furniture, a writing desk that would fit great in your home. Now, this part is important, don’t overstate your desire to own faultless writing desk. Just mention that you like it and might be interested. This leads us into the third tip, don’t be the first to throw out a price.

A smart garage sale host won’t give you a price, they’ll ask you want you think it’s worth. That way you may potentially offer more than they would have asked for it. Do not be fooled by this trickery, instead ask them what an item like this is worth? This will put the ball in your court because they may offer less than you were originally thinking or you can always then take that opportunity to throw out a price you would genuinely be comfortable with. There may come a time where a price cannot be agreed upon. This can be very upsetting. You’ve now found this amazing piece of used furniture, you can already picture it in your home, but it’s out of reach price-wise.

This leads us to our fourth and final tip, you must always be willing to walk away. The willingness to walk away will solidify your buying power. The perfect piece of used furniture isn’t perfect if the price isn’t right.

One of my favorite spots to find used furniture is at Creative Office Design. You can find them at the address below:

You Don’t Know You Need It Until You Do

You Don’t Know You Need It Until You Do

There are things in life that we all take for granted. Those seemingly little things that we don’t give much thought to until we no longer have them or they stop working and all of a sudden they begin to dominate our lives. When this happens we instantly look to the best people around to help us get things working again. Let’s look at a few examples:

Our Health

Our health is a classic one. You never realize how much you take your health for granted until you are sick. As soon as you get sick, you instantly realize how nice it is to be healthy and you begin to do whatever you need to do to get healthy again. Whether that is visiting a doctor, eating better, or simply resting. Then naturally, as soon as we get healthy, we tend to take it for granted again. So, don’t let that happen to you today. Consider this your reminder that being healthy is something we should be thankful for and take full advantage of!

The Internet

This is a big one. If you are at work (or at home) and the internet goes out, our lives seem to come to a halt. We don’t realize just how much of our time and our activity is dependent on the internet. From texting and talking to friends, to sending emails, to working with online software and games, to streaming Netflix or Hulu. So much of what we do is tied to the internet. It is really amazing considering just a few decades ago the internet as we know it didn’t exist!

Water

Water is obviously something that we all know we need, but we often take for granted just how easy and convenient it is for us to access clean, fresh water. I certainly took this for granted until I visited some very impoverished countries in Africa. In some areas that I visited water was not a guarantee. Here in my home, I know that I can turn on the sink and have fresh drinking water, or turn on the shower and wash, run the washing machine and have clean clothes, or even just flush the toilet! In many places though, they don’t have these luxuries. After I returned home, one of my most treasured “luxuries” was being able to have a hot shower whenever I wanted.

Electricity

Electricity is our last one for today. Just like water, it is one of those things that you don’t realize you need until you don’t have it anymore and so much of our life depends on it. Earlier we looked at how important the Internet is to us, well, just think that even the Internet is dependent upon electricity. If the electricity goes out, not only do we not have the internet, but we don’t have any lights, TV’s, computers, or appliances! This happened to our office the other week which is what inspired this article. I took electricity for granted, and as soon as it went out I needed to find the best electrician to help us get back and running as soon as possible. And boy did I! I’ve got their information at the bottom of this article and I would highly recommend them. They got out to our offices right away and got us up and running again quickly.

Bonus Electricity

If you drive an electric vehicle as I do, you never know when you will need a car charger. I found this out the hard way when I got home with my new car and didn’t have any place to charge it. I needed someone to come out and do an electric car charger installation for me right away, otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to drive to work the next day! Fortunately, those same guys were able to help me out and got me and my car set up and ready to go!

This whole process has made me a lot more thankful for some of the things I have and I hope this article can help you feel a little more thankful as well!
